How We Determine a Movie’s Box Office Verdict
At Cinema Guru, we analyze the box office performance of every theatrical release to determine whether a film is a Hit, Flop, Superhit, or Blockbuster based on its budget and earnings. Here’s how we categorize a film’s success:
Box Office Classification Criteria
-
Hit – If a film’s box office collection matches its production budget, it is considered a Hit.
- Example: A movie with a ₹10 crore budget collecting ₹10 crore.
-
Average – If a film earns 80% to 90% of its budget, it is termed Average or Above Average depending on its reception.
- Example: A ₹10 crore budget movie earning ₹8-9 crore.
-
Flop – If a film earns less than 70% of its budget, it is categorized as a Flop.
- Example: A ₹10 crore budget movie earning ₹7 crore or less.
-
Big Flop – If a film collects less than 50% of its budget, it is considered a Bigger Flop.
- Example: A ₹10 crore budget movie earning ₹5 crore or less.
-
Superhit – If a film earns 1.5 to 2 times its budget, it is classified as a Superhit.
- Example: A ₹10 crore budget movie collecting ₹15-20 crore.
-
Blockbuster – A film that earns double or more than its production budget is termed a Blockbuster.
- Example: A ₹10 crore budget movie collecting ₹20 crore or more.
At Cinema Guru, we always consider a film’s budget before labeling it a hit or a flop. A movie should not be over-budget for its potential revenue, as profitability plays a key role in its final verdict.
