Tanya Arora, New Delhi: Vikrant Massey garnered a lot of praise for playing the role of Manoj Kumar Sharma in "12th Fail." Now, he appears as a serial killer in the Netflix-released film "Sector 36."

This film is based on the 2006 Nithari village murder case in Noida’s Sector 31, where a psycho killer brutally killed over 24 children. However, the movie also includes a backstory. You can decide whether to spend your weekend watching this film or not.

 Story of Sector-36
The story of Sector-36 begins with the psycho killer Prem (played by Vikrant Massey), who only eats chicken and is obsessed with the show "Kaun Banega Crorepati" (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?). Without watching this show, he doesn't move from his spot. After the quiz show ends, he goes straight to his bathroom, where he dismembers a girl he has killed. He commits his crimes at the mansion of a businessman named Bassi in Karnal.

This marks the beginning of the murder spree. While Prem deeply loves his wife and daughter, he brutally kills children living in the nearby village. Despite several children going missing and complaints being made by the families, Sub-Inspector Ram Charan Pandey (played by Deepak Dobriyal) does nothing. The child who sees a dead body and informs the police also goes missing.

Despite the increasing number of murders, the police do not take the case of the missing children seriously until Ram Charan Pandey's own daughter Vedhu is targeted. When Prem tries to abduct Pandey’s daughter from a Ramleela fair, Pandey finally registers the case and starts digging deeper into the investigation.

In the two-hour-four-minute-long film Sector 36, the reason why Prem kills children and how he became a psycho killer is also shown by director Aditya Nimbalkar. When Prem was a child, he was sexually abused by his uncle, who owned a sweet shop and kept Prem locked inside.

The young Prem, who endured abuse in his childhood, later stabs his uncle with the same knife he uses to cut chicken and then dismembers him, consuming his flesh. These scenes are shown intermittently throughout the movie. Meanwhile, Pandey relentlessly investigates the case, questioning everyone from rickshaw drivers to compounders, and eventually discovers that Prem, the servant of businessman Bassi, is behind all the murders.

Though Pandey is stopped from questioning businessman Bassi by DCP Jawahar Rastogi (played by Darshan Jariwala), Pandey manages to summon Prem for interrogation, where Prem confesses to all his crimes, believing that his master Bassi will protect him.

Prem confesses that after killing his uncle and consuming his flesh, he developed a craving for human meat every two to three months, which led him to kill children. He sold some of their organs to a compounder for money, while the rest he consumed himself.

Pandey’s investigation also reveals that Bassi, Prem’s employer, was involved in the murders. Bodies were found in Bassi's water tank and nearby drains, leading to the arrest of both Prem and Bassi.

However, DCP Jawahar, now working with the Intelligence Bureau (IB), saves his friend Bassi, placing all the blame on Prem. During the investigation, Sub-Inspector Pandey also loses his life.

No Suspense, but Still Spine-Chilling
Though the story of this crime thriller is quite straightforward, especially if you are familiar with the Nithari case, some scenes will still give you chills. However, questions remain about why Pandey was dismissed from the police force despite solving the case and why DCP Jawahar replaced him.

It’s unclear whether Pandey’s junior officer, Bassi, and Jawahar conspired to have him killed. Some parts of Prem's backstory are also repeated by the filmmakers. However, if you're not familiar with the Nithari case in detail, this film is definitely worth watching on Netflix.
